BACKGROUND:
Henri Giraud is a small, historic maison in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne. The family has roots dating back to 1625. Claude Giraud, the 12th generation winemaker and first to bottle exclusively under the family name, farms 9ha of mostly Pinot Noir and some Chardonnay in Aÿ.
Aÿ was considered among the greatest, if not the absolute greatest, source of Pinot Noir-based wine (including Burgundy) by the French monarchies of the late medieval and early Renaissance periods.
Claude has been instrumental in reviving oak barrel production in the Argönne Forest, historically used to create oak barrels for the Champagne region, a dormant process until his recent efforts.
These wines are at once opulent yet mineral and complex; indulgent yet historically instructive; an incredible marriage of legendary terroir and winemaking at the highest level.
This tasting represents a lineup of their prestige cuvées, all magnificent expressions of Aÿ fruit and Argönne oak. This includes the house’s top cuvée, the Argönne Aÿ Grand Cru, an ultimate expression of this marriage which Jancis Robinson calls “a sort of Montrachet of Champagne!”
