My name is Samuel Fritz-Tate and I am the head sommelier and SVP of sales of Wineonline. Since joining the company in 2017, I have helped the Bick family grow what was already a great portfolio into one of Ontario’s finest. I am a devoted Burgundy lover and collector and through mutual friends and contacts have been able to bring on some of the regions most famous wineries that for some time have not even been in the market. Today I am proud to present my favourite signing of 2020, a true super star of Gevrey Chambertin who continues to get better ever year.

Domaine Henri Magnien is our brightest star in Gevrey and is universally called one of the villages brightest young stars.  Charles Magnien took over from his father in 2009 and has since restored this Domaine to its rightful place atop the quality pyramid in Gevrey. The domaine owns some prime sites in the north west of Gevrey, in an area called the Cote St Jacques, including prime holdings in Lavaux and Estournelles, and Ruchottes Chambertin. His greatest parcel though, is the greatest holdings of Cazetiers, known as the “Le Petit Chambertin” because it has the same combination of soil types. Year in and year out this wine is lauded as grand cru quality for a fraction of the price and is one of the most sought after wines in our portfolio. Blessed with old vines, Charles is able to do very little to the grapes, and extract very gently to make powerful hedonistic wines with incredibly elegant tannins and vibrant freshness.

This tasting will include 3 vintages worth of his wines and showcase what I think are his best parcels, as I walk you through not only these wines but his wines, and Gevrey as a whole and give you a preview (as well as exclusive access) to the 2019 allocation landing this June.

"His style of wines lean towards the slightly more fruit-driven side - more Mortet than say Rousseau. His is a new name on the scene and judging by the quality of these 2018s, plus two or three 2017s, it is a name to look out for.”

Neil Martin, Vinous Media

"Happily ensconced in his new winery, Charles Magnien continues his rapid ascent through the Burgundian firmament. 2019 is the finest vintage this domaine has produced to date: supple, seductive and perfumed, these are wines of immense charm that will turn heads in their youth but which have the substance and energy to age with grace, too. As the market starts to take notice, now is the time to secure allocations.”

William Kelley, The Wine Advocate, January 2021
